The Senators got off to a great start, with an immediate chance on Habs goalie Peter Budaj and drew a penalty 10 seconds into the period. The best chance for the Senators came on a passing play between Patrick Wiercioch and Kyle Turris. Montreal managed to kill the penalty, but Zack Smith gave Ottawa the lead seconds later, scoring off the faceoff. Two minutes later, Ales Hemsky tipped a Wiercioch point shot into the Montreal net. 1:15 later, an Ottawa 2-on-1 between Mika Zibanejad and Smith resulted in Smith's second goal of the game. It was a fantastic start, but with 55 minutes remaining, the lead was far from safe. It took Montreal just over a minute to respond. Andrei Markov scored from the goal line on a goal that Craig Anderson wants back. It was a poor goal and helped Montreal turn up the pressure. Less than two minutes later, Montreal added another, on a Mike Weaver point shot that went passed a screened Anderson. Weaver was involved in a dangerous play minutes later when he stuck out his hip on an unsuspecting Clarke MacArthur and sent the Ottawa winger into another Montreal player. MacArthur was down on the ice for some time but would eventually return. The puck was nowhere near MacArthur, but no interference penalty was called. Montreal wrapped up the first period with a late goal from Max Pacioretty. Pacioretty put a backhand passed Craig Anderson after beating Sens defender Eric Gryba. The first period ended tied at three; shot 13-11 in favour of the Senators. Ottawa started the second period by successfully killing off an early penalty but quickly fell behind on a Lars Eller goal. It was bad goal for Gryba: he panicked when Eller hit him behind the net, desperately cleared the puck to Brian Gionta, who fed the puck back to Eller. Eller, unchecked because Gryba had fallen, wristed the shot passed Anderson for Montreal's fourth goal. Ottawa equalized shortly after on a strong drive to the net by Smith that left a rebound for Chris Neil. However, the goal was waived off due to incidental contact; the Montreal defender having slid into Budaj. It was the wrong call, but that's how things are going. Things got heated after the disallowed goal. Karlsson laid a clean hip check on Brendan Gallagher. Alex Galchenyuk did not approve and went after Karlsson. It was sort of a fight, but Karlsson didn't drop his gloves and both were assessed roughing minors, with Galchenyuk getting the extra two for starting things. Midway through the period, Smith set up another excellent chance on a 2-on-1 with Karlsson. Rather fed Karlsson, Smith sent a pass to the trailing man, Kyle Turris, whose snap shot rang off the crossbar. A tilt between Jared Tinordi and Gryba result in an instigator penalty for Montreal. It was a nice power play from Ottawa with plenty of good movement, especially from Erik Karlsson. It ended in unlucky fashion though. Zibanejad couldn't accept a pass and the puck trickled to Wiercioch. With a Montreal forward on him, Wiercioch didn't realize there was another Hab behind him. His stick was lifted from behind and Pacioretty was off on a breakaway. Pacioretty wasted no time firing a wrist shot five-hole on Anderson. The period ended 5-3 in favour of Montreal, with Ottawa outshooting Montreal by a healthy margin (28-15). Pacioretty picked up where he left off to start the third period, with an early goal to complete the hat trick. Five minutes into the third period, Erik Condra had a chance to bring Ottawa within two goals, but wristed the puck off the post. After Montreal added a seventh goal, Zibanejad netted his 15th of the season late in the period. He managed to slide the puck five-hole on Budaj, who had been solid since his rough start, while falling. It was too little too late. Montreal wins 7-4. Shots 43-23 in favour of Ottawa. Smith had a fantastic game, scoring two goals and had a few opportunities to net a third. He set up a few of his teammates with excellent scoring chances. He spent a little too much time in the third period trying to start something physically with Montreal, and took an unnecessary penalty. Sure Emelin sold the call, but it wasn't Smith's first slash of the period. His complaining about the call (a feature of his game emphasized recently) earned him a misconduct. Still, paired with Mika Zibanejad, he was flying all night. It was one of his best games as a Senator. Yes, he made a defensive gaffe on the fifth Montreal goal by not being aware that there was a man behind him, but when Ottawa looked dangerous tonight, Wiercioch was involved. He managed just one assist, but looked impressive on the power play. Gryba has been steady for the Senators all year and his play has changed the opinions of many Sens fans. Tonight was not one of those nights. Gryba looked bad on two of Montreal's goals but I expect him to rebound. Craig Anderson was terrible tonight. Montreal's first goal was awful and all on Anderson. The goal gave Montreal a spark and was the first of SEVEN unanswered goals. Ottawa finally managed to limit an opponent's shots and yet could not get a save from Andy. Yes, Montreal did score on a breakaway, but you can make saves on breakaways. He was only really hung out to dry on Montreal's seventh goal. At one point in the third, he had allowed 7 goals on 18 shots. That's just absurdly bad. In fairness to Andy, it was clearly not his night and I'm not sure why he was left in, absorbing all the goals. The only thing I can think of is Ottawa was on the first night of consecutive games. He finished the night with a .696 SV%. Weaver scored his first goal of the season and added an assist in the first period. He was also a physical force and his late hit on Clarke MacArthur left the Ottawa winger stinging for the rest of the game. Pacioretty had a fantastic game. Absolutely fantastic. He had a five-point night, including a hat trick. He put the game out of reach for Montreal and now needs just two goals for 40 on the year. Dr. Both MacArthur and Hemsky took big hits in the first period. MacArthur was interfered with by Weaver and lay in obvious pain on the ice for several minutes. He played the rest of the game, but looked uncomfortable skating on every shift. Ales Hemsky took a big hit from Tinordi in the first period along the boards. Large enterprises strive for 100 percent certainty that the migration process will not impact the business; therefore, they’ll usually start slowly, by migrating one application or process to the cloud. This is where hybrid clouds kick in. Hybrid clouds offer (just as their name insinuates) a hybrid between on-premise and cloud infrastructure. But once even part of the business is in the cloud, the need arises for cloud security. As data is migrated away from the local “safe” data center, access to the information is no longer controlled by the enterprise, and different, cloud-oriented, security measures must be considered. Apr. Data is dumb but we can't seem to get enough of it these days. An entire industry has evolved to make sense of the massive amounts of data being generated every day. Massive data collection by itself does not guarantee the context required to solve business and IT problems... If we are smart about data, however, it will lead us in the right direction. Today's businesses are defined by the software they run on, enabling them to innovate and create new services faster. Apple re-invented the music industry through software; Netflix changed the way we consume movies through software; grocery shopping, taxi-hire, parcel-logistics, car rental, travel booking... these are all industries that have been completely disrupted by software. Apr. Assuming that your organization is well down the road when it comes to adopting the Cloud and in fact, has been utilizing the Cloud for a while, then you are likely a true believer that ultimately all of your applications will be migrated to the Cloud. It is no longer a question of "if" but more a question of "when" and "how." These days, the majority of test, dev, external websites and mobile apps are already born in the cloud. Applications make businesses run. Businesses have tons of applications ranging from purchased (commercial off the shelf) to homegrown (bespoke) and likely some customized, purchased apps that now look a lot like the homegrown ones. One of the big problems with apps is that once they are built and deployed they rarely get replaced or decommissioned. Application sprawl and aging application portfolios are among the root causes for much of the fixed cost in an IT budget and can consume close to 80% of the dollars. Apr. The term "service chaining" hasn't quite yet made it into the mainstream IT vernacular. It's currently viewed as a technical mechanism for directing packets, flows or messages (depending on where you sit in the network stack) around the network. Service chaining is the answer to "how do orchestrate the flow of data across the great divide that exists between L2-3 and L4-7"? There are already multiple implementations, some that take advantage of virtual overlay protocols like VXLAN and NVGRE, others that use proprietary tags, and some that even operate at layer 7 and take advantage of HTTP's natural redirection capabilities to move data from one service to another. Apr. While technology changes on a regular basis, IT teams have had a standard approach to administration. In recent years, however, there has been a drastic shift in data center administration. One of the biggest shifts is the adoption of private and public clouds. In part one of this series, we will examine private cloud architectures. Today, companies keep more and more data electronically in lieu of hard copies. Whether they are large multi-layer Photoshop images or files that need to be kept in order to comply with medical or financial regulations, files are getting bigger and there are certainly more of them. Historically, companies would have a series of onsite servers, a backup and retrieval system, miscellaneous supporting hardware, and lots of documented procedures. This would ultimately lead to a never-ending need for new capital expenditures. Above all, one of the biggest issues IT admins wrestle with is managing and adding server space to accommodate all those ever-growing files. Enter the cloud. Mar. Working with the Windows 8. Hopefully you never forgot Group Policy! Whenever the topic of working with desktops in business is brought up, IT Pro’s always want to manage and maintain those desktops. For me the first thing that always come to mind is Group Policy and hopefully does for you as well. Group Policy is one of the primary tools you can quickly leverage to help control your IT infrastructure. What better way to manage our desktops than with a free tool that is built into Active Directory, and has been there since the Windows NT days. In today’s post I am going to take a look at some of the new features in Windows 8.1 Group Policy as well as some of then new settings you will want to learn to leverage to help manage your desktops. Mar. Cloud computing powered by open source is of growing interest all over the world. Enterprise customers are frustrated with growing costs and limitations of traditional IT software. This problem is exacerbated when start-ups appear out of nowhere to compete with agile businesses powered by the cloud. To meet customers' needs, I have seen a number of legacy IT vendors extend the OpenStack cloud platform to give their customers a viable cloud computing operating system that does not lock customers in with a single provider and limited options. Mar. Cobbling together point solutions provides tools, but doesn't promote the key collaborative intelligence integrated cloud-based unified security offers. Of all the strategies and tactics available to prevent breaches, deter data leakage and theft, control access and secure beyond the so-called network perimeter, the one that is emerging as an achievable and affordable best practice is that of unified security from the cloud. But if you look across the web, you will no doubt come across various versions of what constitutes “unified,” what is “protected,” and, what is “security from the cloud?” Luckily this means that the concept of unified security from the cloud is becoming more and more of a best practice. In general, the practice of unified security is the centralization of all security functions under one umbrella across the enterprise. This means more than ensuring data encryption. It means more than access policies. It means more than intrusion detection, malware blocking, data review. It’s more than ensuring compliance to the various regulatory bodies that provide general guidelines. It is the sum of all these things…and more. Mar. Perhaps not as popular as its brothers and sisters I, P and S, Network-As-A-Service or NaaS has slowly started to appear in industry press, articles and presentations. While sometimes associated with a hypervisor based overlay solution, its definition is not very clear, which is not at all surprising. Our industry does not do too well in defining new terms. I ran across this presentation from Usenix 2012 that details a NaaS solution that adds a software forwarding engine to switches and routers that provide specific services for some well known cloud computing workloads. Mar. While the winter blend production does bring some relief, don’t expect major drops due to higher global demand along with the various feuds in the world. Mar. In the aftermath of the withdrawal of Ukrainian military forces, the security situation in Crimea is still unstable. Nearly 300,000 Crimean Tatars reside on the strategic Black Sea peninsula,... A schism emerged among Syrian jihadist groups after al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri announced on February 3 that al-Qaeda has “no connection” to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) (Daily Times [Lahore], February 13). The message, which was circulated on jihadi websites, has forced Syrian jihadist groups to side with ISIS or al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, Jabhat al-Nusra (Fisyria.com, January 13). The announcement is also affecting jihadist groups outside of Syria such as those in Indonesia. Jihadists from Indonesia have used the Syrian Civil War as an opportunity to rebuild their international jihadist connections, with Indonesians joining al-Nusra, ISIS and humanitarian organizations in Syria that are connected to terrorist groups. The announced split has faced Indonesian jihadists with the decision to support al-Zawahiri or ISIS. On the battlefields in Syria, most Indonesian aid workers and fighters supported al-Nusra at the start of the Syrian Civil War, but the main domestic Indonesian jihadist group on the island of Sulawesi as well as most Indonesian-language jihadist websites now appear to be more aligned with ISIS. If Indonesian jihadists align with ISIS over al-Qaeda, this could accelerate the globalization of the split in the al-Qaeda movement, with more international affiliates siding with ISIS and therefore weakening al-Zawahiri. In 2011, the Syrian rebel group Ahrar al-Sham posted the first online “martyrdom” notice of an Indonesian militant, Reza Fardi (a.k.a. Abu Muhammad), who died fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s forces near Aleppo. Since then, Indonesian intelligence officials estimate that 50 Indonesians have joined the rebels in Syria (Jakarta Post, January 8). Dozens of Indonesians in the Hilal al-Ahmar Society in Indonesia (HASI), considered the humanitarian wing of Indonesian terrorst group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), are also providing aid to the rebels, with some of them likely switching uniforms from relief worker to rebel (Jakarta Globe, January 30). Jakarta is concerned that Indonesians in Syria may acquire the bomb-making skills and experience needed to replicate the wave of attacks that JI carried out in Indonesia between 1999-2002. During those three years, JI bombed Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, attempted to assassinate the Philippine ambassador in Jakarta and carried out church bombings in Jakarta, Sumatra (Indonesia’s largest island), Java (the most populated island), the island of Lombok (east of Bali) and the island of Batam (a shipping hub on the Singapore Strait). The year 2002 concluded with JI’s bombing attack at Kuta Beach in Bali, which killed nearly 200 people. When Indonesia’s elite counter-terrorism unit, Densus 88, began capturing key JI militants in 2005, starting with Bali bomb-maker Dr. Azahari Husin, Indonesia observed that most JI fighters were Indonesians or Malaysians who fought in Afghanistan in the 1980s and 1990s. Densus 88 and other countries’ intelligence forces captured or killed almost all of the militants involved in the JI bombings, which neutralized the JI threat in Indonesia by the time of JI co-founder Abu Bakar Bashir’s arrest in 2011 (Dawn [Bangkok], August 17, 2003; The Star [Petaling Jaya], December 17, 2012). The Indonesians in Syria, however, are now establishing networks with al-Nusra, ISIS and Caucasian and Central Asian jihadist groups that may enable them to bring their Syrian experience back to Indonesia and revive JI under the umbrella of Mujahideen Indonesia Timor (MIT), Indonesia’s most active terrorist group. This could resemble the way Indonesians who fought in Afghanistan in the 1980s and 1990s contributed to JI in the 2000s. One commonality between Indonesian militants in Syria like Reza Fardi and groups like HASI and MIT is that they all received ideological inspiration and operational support from Abu Bakar Bashir. Even though the 76-year-old Bashir is serving a 15-year prison sentence in Indonesia for funding an al-Qaeda in the Veranda of Mecca training camp in Aceh (Aceh’s nickname, “Veranda of Mecca,” refers to its history as a center of Islamic learning), he is allowed to release statements and publish books. The second version of the book Tadzkiroh (Warning and Advice), which Bashir published from prison in 2013 calls the Indonesian government “apostate” for cooperating with the “infidel” United States. [1] After the start of the Syrian Civil War, Bashir wrote that Syria is analogous to Afghanistan two decades ago, saying that the experience fighting in Syria could provide Indonesians with a “university for jihad education” (The Diplomat [Tokyo], February 1). Bashir may have influenced six militants who were killed in a January shootout in Jakarta while plotting to blow up Buddhist temples and the Burmese Embassy after Bashir called for Indonesians to fight Burma because of its treatment of the Muslim Rohingyas (Jakarta Globe, January 14). One arrested militant told security forces that the cell planned to meet fellow militants in Syria after carrying out their attack on the embassy. He also said the cell robbed a bank near Jakarta in December 2013 to finance their travel to Syria, including the purchase of fake passports for nearly $1,000 each. He also confessed that the cell bombed one Buddhist temple in Jakarta in August 2013. [2] Evidence from the shootout suggested that one of the militants in the cell trained in bomb-making with MIT in Poso, Sulawesi. The MIT leader, Santoso, is the former leader of the Poso wing of Jamaat Ansarul Tawhid (JAT), an offshoot of JI founded by Bashir in the late 2000s (Tempo.com [Jakarta], January 1). HASI, which like al-Mukmin was co-founded by Bashir and Abdullah Sungkar, has organized more than 50 public fundraising campaigns in 20 Indonesian provinces to support the rebels in Syria. It also runs various websites to receive online donations. HASI’s lack of transparency about where funds go after they are collected and the use of JI members who were released from prison as preachers at fundraisers raises concerns about whether these funds are actually being used to revive JI (Jihadsyam.blogspot.com, August 26, 2013). Fundraising events also promote JI’s intolerance of the Shi’a (al-Assad is an Alawite, which some regard as a branch of the Shi’a). A July 2013 fundraiser in Central Java used the slogan “The Shi'a Betrayal” to attract participants, while another in Sukoharjo in May 2013 attended by more than 1,500 people warned of the emerging “Shi’a grip” over Indonesia (VOA-Islam.com, September 2, 2013; Arrahmah.com, May 23, 2013). It appears that the first group of Indonesian fighters in Syria fought together with Jabhat al-Nusra. Indonesia’s first “martyr” in Syria, Reza Fardi, reportedly died in Latakia (northwestern Syria) fighting as part of the Suquor al-Izz Brigade, an ideological ally of al-Nusra (Sydney Morning Herald, January 4). HASI and other Malaysian aid providers in Syria have also seen their shipments intercepted, plundered and even shot at by ISIS after aid workers refused to give bayat (a pledge of allegiance) to ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. [3] This has likely influenced these Indonesians to work with al-Nusra and explains why HASI shipments are more frequent in al-Nusra strongholds in northwestern Syria than in ISIS strongholds near the Syria-Iraq border. However, most Indonesian-language jihadist websites, such as Almustaqbal.net, announced their “support and solidarity” with ISIS. [4] In addition, the popular Albusyro.com blocked the membership of anyone who posted messages against ISIS. A former JI member, Ustadz Rois, now in prison for his role in bombing the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in 2004, criticized the influential website Arrahmah.com for only posting al-Nusra statements. Santoso and his sub-commanders in MIT who trained in the Bashir-sponsored camp in Aceh may also be more inclined to ISIS. Santoso, for example, honored al-Qaeda in Iraq’s former leader, Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi, by choosing the alias of “Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqawi al-Indonesi” (Arrahmah.com, October 15, 2012). Santoso’s most recent video, which praised a suicide bombing at a Poso police headquarters in Sulawesi, was hosted by a pro-ISIS website (Al-mustabal.net, October 31, 2013). Moreover, ISIS’s goal to spread Shari’a across all Islamic lands may be more likely to appeal to Santoso and MIT than al-Nusra’s objective, which is to overthrow al-Assad and focus on the establishment of an Islamic state in Syria before exporting jihad. Indonesian jihadists in Syria, relief organizations like HASI and jihadist groups like MIT are all part of networks that are undergoing a revival because of the Syrian Civil War. The key foundations of this revival are Abu Bakar Bashir’s continued ideological leadership, Santoso’s growing jihadist movement in Sulawesi (with links to cells in Jakarta) and the opportunity Syria is providing Indonesian militants and aid workers to reconnect with the international jihadist community. As the civil war within a civil war escalates in Syria between ISIS and al-Zawahiri’s recognized affiliate, Jabhat al-Nusra, Indonesian jihadists may be forced to take sides in the dispute like other militants within and outside Syria. It appears that MIT and Indonesian jihadists who are active online are more closely aligned with ISIS’s ideology and leadership than al-Zawahiri’s. However, purportedly nonviolent actors, such as Indonesian humanitarian groups, may prefer al-Nusra over ISIS. An MIT expression of support for or affiliation with ISIS would suggest that MIT might begin carrying out attacks targeting foreigners, Christians and Shi’a in Indonesia. Thus far, MIT has mostly attacked Indonesian security forces. Similarly, Abu Bakar Bashir might issue a statement from his prison cell calling for Indonesians jihadists to support one of the two sides in the Syrian conflict. In his most recent statement on April 1, Bashir said he “received news from the Internet” about “obstacles” that the “tyrants” placed between the “Mujahideen brothers in Sham” and that al-Zawahiri would not “forget” them (Shamikh1.info, February 2014). This suggests that Bashir may remain loyal to al-Qaeda just as he was when he co-founded JI in the 1990s and oversaw the al-Qaeda in the Veranda of Mecca training camp in Aceh in the 2000s. A more decisive statement of support for Jabhat al-Nusra from Bashir could have a significant influence on the Indonesian foreign fighters in Syria as well as MIT in Sulawesi. However, it could also lead to a split between Bashir’s loyalists and Santoso’s loyalists if Santoso rejects Bashir’s advice, continues to issue pro-ISIS statements and revives the vision for a pan-regional Islamic caliphate in Southeast Asia like the caliphate ISIS is fighting for in Iraq and Syria. news1@kilgorenewsherald. Bruce Crowe “The cost of freedom. In the United States America, in Texas, the words have history and they have meaning, but they’ve lost their power, Bruce Crowe says. In the Ukraine, they’re the harsh, hopeful, powerful reality people are facing every day. It’s been almost six years since Crowe, founder of Kilgore’s Cypress Interactive, relocated his family to Eastern Europe as missionaries. Based in Rzhyshchiv, they’re witnessing a nation’s rising firsthand and sharing their neighbors’ anxiety as Russia’s shadow falls ever darker on the country. Crowe was in Maidan, Kiev’s Independence Square, “where it all went down” at Christmas as protesters gathered in the heart of the city. “What we witnessed, with basically the revolution in the center, was the closest I’ve ever seen to the cost of freedom,” Crowe said Wednesday, Skyping from the pizza cafe he and his wife, Deborah, are establishing in Rzhyshchiv, an hour’s journey from Kiev. “These people have shown they’re ready to lay down their lives for their kids, their grandkids, their future generations. They’ve had enough of the tyranny. The Ukrainian people had their fill of tyranny, missionary Bruce Crowe says, protesters of all ages gathering in opposition to corrupt government officials. After the ousting of their failed administration, with the specter of invasion looming from Russia, the people are working to pick up the pieces of their country, filling the political void. It sounds cliche, but it’s powerful to be a part of it, to see a nation rise up and be born. They have an identity they didn’t have before, and they’re ready to die to keep it. Working with officials in his Ukrainian home and City of Kilgore leaders, Crowe established a sister-city link between the two municipal governments. The relationship has waned in recent years, but with the political and social upheaval in Ukraine and its Crimean Peninsula, Crowe is eager to reconnect the cities, a world apart. “We actually had a team come over and visit,” he said, recalling the private group Kilgore Economic Development Corporation’s Lisa Denton joined. “We did some business-development type meetings with the city, answered some questions pertaining to developing a budget. It went well, but the inroads were quashed soon after when recently ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych took control. “When he came into power the political landscape changed. It was not U.S.-friendly. People were a lot more conscious about the relationships they formed,” Crowe explained. Rzhyshchiv’s mayor and other local politicians were forced to change parties or face the consequences. “When there were any political campaigns here in Ukraine locally, if you put up a flag or poster of someone else you were marked. “That’s the kind of control that the president had. Now that he’s gone, there’s a lot more political neutrality toward the (European Union) and America. Definitely. The majority are leaning toward escaping Russia’s grasp. Tens of thousands of soldiers remain poised to invade Ukraine at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s command, extending the former Soviet Union’s footing in its Western smaller neighbor to the west. The military might looming along Ukraine’s eastern border is half the problem, Crowe says. “You’ve got a void. A political void. Basically, the previous administration is gone,” he explained. “Yes, it was extremely corrupt. Yanukovych, the former president, he had people in charge of the police, people in charge of the utilities, oil and gas … all of those guys have fled too because they’re all part of the corruption. Fortunately, the void is steadily being filled by good, honest people, Crowe added, not political professionals. Out in the country it’s business as usual, many Ukrainians living as Americans did 150 years ago. “People are very self-sustaining. Everyone’s got a garden. They’re good – it’s not like there’s any dependency on the government. It’s so corrupt, people have just learned how to go on with their lives. That’s a good thing. At the same time, people are waiting ... There’s just no middle class in the Ukraine. The poor, they’re not really as affected (by the political turmoil). It’s the rich oligarchs and those that are in charge that have been finally booted out. Now there’s a hope and an excitement that maybe there would be that middle class, that ability to democratically operate and create jobs and people make a life for themselves. The Crowes’ relationships with local government officials remain. – the couple bought property in the center of Rzhyshchiv for their cafe, next to the bus station, aiming to create a safe hangout for the 2,000-plus students of the town. “They’ve got nothing to do but drink. There’s no night-life, nothing is family-friendly. The cafe is finished but not officially open – the Crowes (seven family members and one on the way) have been waiting for gas for about eight months. “It’s taken two, almost three years, to start a private business. And that’s me, an American. I can’t imagine a Ukrainian trying to do it. It’s not Texas … We try to just be a light for God. We’re here primarily for him, the Gospel, to try and bring hope to people. That’s our mission. With all eyes on Ukraine and Russia, with the political void it would be advantageous to resurrect the sister-city link between Kilgore and Rzhyshchiv, Crowe says, to give residents in East Texas a chance to build relationships, give them a chance to see the people of a country in the midst of revolution. “Negatively it’s not affecting us at the moment, but we do have friends being called up on reserves: some tears shed, wives knowing that at any moment their husbands could be called up to fight. That’s what really hits on a local level. With a Skype conference in the works, tentatively set next week, Crowe invites questions – readers can submit them to news1@kilgorenewsherald.com. “A lot of sister cities will have economic development partnerships and business ventures together. With the change of government there are more opportunities that will open up. It will eventually become more business-friendly, but up to this point the benefits have been cultural, just relationships. Accepting the threat Putin represents, Crowe insists he’s not anti-Russian. The facts are what they are, and he continues to pursue positive in-roads to the east as he continues his work in Ukraine. In the meantime, he’s watching his neighbors with ever-growing respect, their fervor as they pick up the pieces of their government, their country, and build it anew. “It really is the voices of the people. Everything that’s happening is just the regular voices. It’s not the fascists. It’s grandmas and fathers and teenagers and students. It’s just regular people out, standing up. As an employee of the MWSD for 24 years and the President of Midd-West Education Association for the past 8 years I am very concerned about the chaos that has been happening in the district for several months now. In my 24 years in the district we have never experienced these issues. I am very proud of our students, faculty, staff and administration. We are all working very hard in spite of the chaos around us. I think that this is something that we all need to keep in mind because eventually this will catch up to us. Our students are making great strides and progress and we need to keep that going. I heard Mr. Sassaman say at the last board that we are losing some very good teachers and they will be difficult to replace. I agree. Think about a new teacher coming out of school right now. Why would they want to apply to Midd-West? I have serious concerns about that. I have a few points to make. The first is that we need to make decisions and stick to them. The board is giving so many mixed messages to the staff and students. Please let administration do their jobs. Trust that they can do their jobs and make good decisions. They have many years of education and experience. You need to believe in them and support them. My second point is the issue with the charges against Dr. Knapp. I have no idea if they are true and that’s not for me to decide, but I do know this, as President of MWEA I have responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is to keep confidential information confidential. When we have written information that is not for public knowledge it is numbered, collected and then shredded after being read. If information is leaked you would know exactly who is responsible. If that was done Mr. Abate would not need to ask how The Daily Item got that information. Remember that confidential information is your responsibility and should not be leaked to anyone, including teachers or the press. And the 23-year-old, whose first senior team was at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is reaping the benefits of that self-belief. In Brisbane on Friday night, she added another 200 metre backstroke national title at the selection trials for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games to the silver medal she won at last year's world titles. Not only is Hocking looking towards the 100 and 200 backstroke at the Commonwealth Games, that begin in July, but she will also compete at the Pan Pacific championships on the Gold Coast in August, and it is there that she expects to meet America's Olympic and world champion Missy Franklin. Hocking said Franklin, who this month was named the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year, was the ultimate challenge. "Commies [Commonwealth Games] is such an Australian event, we carry so much pride in them and I know that I am so proud to be representing Australia, and it's a great meet," she said. "[But] Missy's phenomenal - everyone knows that, so I just get in there and I enjoy racing with her and I know that one day when I'm older I'll look back and say I got to race Missy Franklin. It's just exciting for me. Hocking said even though she was not happy with her winning time of two minutes 7.52 seconds, which is slower than she swum earlier this year, with 100 breaststroke champion Emily Seebohm touching in second (2:08.28) and Meagen Nay (2:08.44), she was learning to be satisfied if she had achieved her goal. "Sometimes it's just about getting on the podium, which I did tonight. I think that's my sixth consecutive 200 back win at the Australian championships, and that's pretty special to me," she said. "My best races are the ones I don't really remember what I did. I just went in, had fun and raced it, so I think that I just have to keep that mentality that I'm happy with the result. The time wasn't great but I won, so I'm happy. Meanwhile, Alicia Coutts said her decision to drop the 100 freestyle paid off when she won the 200 individual medley final in 2:07.52, and earned a place in the 50 butterfly by coming second in the final to Marieke D'Cruz. Coutts has placed at risk a chance of what she regards as a "guaranteed gold" in the 4x100 freestyle relay in order to concentrate on her pet event, the 200IM, but was satisfied with the result. "I was really happy with that time. My coach said if i went under 2:09.45 I could go to Wet 'n' Wild, so that's a bonus, but mostly I wanted to get top three in the world. Racine Ave. at Fulton Street, you probably noticed that owner Jan Seymour is moving a lot of inventory — literally. After 22 years at her current location, Seymour is leaving her beloved West Loop and relocating her business to Evanston — but not because she wants to. “I’ve always been a West Sider and I hate to leave,” she said. “I love this neighborhood. Not only has Seymour been in her current location for more than two decades, but before that she was at Madison and Aberdeen Streets for 20 years, and at Peoria and Van Buren Streets for seven years. “I started doing business in the neighborhood when Skid Row still was here,” she said. When Seymour received notice last year that her building’s owners would not renew her lease and that she would have to move her business, she began looking for another space in the area. “Starting last May after absorbing the shock of receiving that letter, I looked at 24 buildings throughout the West Side,” she said. “I went as far west as Pulaski, as far south as 35th Street, and as far north as Fullerton. In most cases, she said, the ceiling height or the square footage was not right, the site had no parking, or the building was in bad shape. In some cases, the buildings already had entered foreclosure. Finally, Seymour found a space in Evanston that met her needs, although she will be downsizing a bit — from 15,000 square feet in her current location to 11,000 square feet in the Evanston space. “But I decided I could make it work, and the landlords are fantastic,” she said. “They are willing to do a build-out and make all the necessary repairs. It’s coming together nicely. The new Jans Antiques will not open for at least another month. Once everything is in place, Seymour will announce the exact address of her Evanston location in the Gazette. In the meantime, she is still selling her wares from her current space. In fact, she is having a moving sale, so now is the time to find a good bargain. “I’ve had the sales going for four months,” she said. “We are discounting in many categories. According to Seymour, many of her current customers come from Evanston and other North Shore communities, so now they will not have to travel as far. “But I have customers from all over,” she said. They come to browse her wondrous maze of antiques, art, and architectural salvage. Jans has everything needed for a restoration project. Customers will find a wealth of items including lighting, classic doors, architectural carved wood and stone, old hardware, furniture, mirrors, bathroom fixtures, stained glass, tin ceiling tiles, pictures, china, and ornamental iron. Currently, her hours are: Wednesday through Friday 1 to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m., and closed Monday and Tuesday. The number is rather healthy. Three of the presumed candidates are taking snaps during the Mountaineers' spring workouts. Two more are not even suited up but will be there for fall practice. “It's a little bit unusual,” offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said of all the quarterbacks. The Mountaineers used three quarterbacks last season, part of the reason they went 4-8. Two of them, Clint Trickett and Paul Millard, are back. But only Millard is playing right now. Trickett observes while his surgically-repaired right shoulder mends. The other snaps are going to junior college transfer Skyler Howard and the long shot of the bunch, Logan Moore, who walked on before the 2012 season and played wide receiver in 2013. Meanwhile, highly touted prep recruit William Crest from Baltimore will arrive during the summer. “There's two guys not taking reps right now that are going to take reps,” Dawson said. “You'd like to have it to where you have a clear-cut deal, right? But with the season we had, we've got to get better. That's what spring is for. The guys that are getting reps now, we're going to evaluate those guys. “It's not going to be a situation where were dividing reps into 10 percent and 20 percent. We can't do that when it comes to the fall. We're going to have to narrow it down pretty quick. Howard looked sharp during scrimmages in the first open practice. Millard did not. The next week, Millard turned it around and Howard struggled at times. “We knew from the end of the season it was going to be an open competition, and it was probably going to keep going until the fall,” said Millard, who completed 55.1 percent of his passes for 1,119 yards, six touchdowns and six interceptions last season. “It'll be a long process. “I think each year I've been here I've been able to grasp the offense at a higher level, in knowing where guys are all the time,” he said. Trickett, a former Florida State transfer, completed 52.8 percent of his throws for 1,605 yards, seven TDs and seven interceptions in 2013. Neither he nor Howard have been cleared to speak with the media this spring. Moore played two seasons at Division II Fairmont State before transferring. After sitting out the 2012 season, he spent 2013 as wide receiver playing mainly on special teams before switching back to quarterback. “It's fun being back at the position I played my whole life,” he said. “I'm just trying to take in what I can, learn the offense and take advantage of my reps and do the best I can. Terry Austin faces felony charges of bribery and official misconduct after he was accused of offering fellow officers a $200 steak dinner to "nail" his ex-wife, the Hancock County Prosecutor said. Austin received information that his ex-wife, Koleki Wright Austin, had a suspended driver’s license and he offered at least three officers with the McCordsville and Fortville police departments a gift card for a $200 steak dinner to pull his ex-wife over for the violation, court documents said. McCordsville Officer Nathan Garner told authorities he received text messages from Austin on Feb. 18. Garner said Austin provided him with his ex-wife’s vehicle description and the approximate time she would be leaving for work. Austin said he would pay for a $200 steak dinner for pulling his ex-wife over and towing her car, officials said. A second McCordsville officer, Officer Shawn Brady, told officials that Austin sent him a Facebook message "sometime either January or February 2014" asking him to keep an eye out for his ex-wife. Brady said Austin sent him his ex-wife’s vehicle information and also offered to buy him a large steak dinner if he would stop her. Austin also sent similar text messages to Fortville Officer Matt Fox on Feb 18, officials said. Fox told investigators he has been friends with Austin for 10 years and he didn’t take the offer seriously. "200.00 Ruth Chris !!!!! First one to nail her !!!!" records showed Austin said to Fox in a text message. When confronted on March 24, Austin told authorities he was just doing his job by providing the information to the McCordsville officers that work in the area where his ex-wife lived, documents said. He said he did not see anything wrong with providing the information and offering a steak dinner to the officer that pulled the vehicle over and towed it. Officials said Austin did a computer check on his ex-wife’s license plate and driving record 25 times between Jan. 1 and March 31. An arrest warrant was issued for Austin on Tuesday and he later surrendered to the Hancock County Jail on Friday.
