The “victim” of a mock drunk-driving accident is checked by paramedics during a staged event at St. Kevin’s High School Friday. A Grade 11 student at St. Kevin’s High School, she decided to participate in the demonstration because she believed it would resonate more deeply with her peers if “they see their own friends get taken away in a police car and a hearse. The purpose of the re-enactment is to deter students from drinking and driving. The topic is particularly timely considering the school’s prom is two weeks away. The mock accident was co-ordinated by the school’s Students Against Distracted Driving (SADD) chapter and carried out by emergency crews. The mock head-on collision involved two vehicles and resulted in fake injury and death. The student playing the drunk driver was handcuffed at the scene of the accident and escorted to a nearby Royal Newfoundland Constabulary vehicle. When asked what message he hopes students take away from the re-enactment, Gerry Antle, captain of the Goulds Volunteer Fire Department, said, “To think twice before you decide (to drink and drive). There’s nothing wrong with going out and having, you know, a party and having a few drinks, but just have a designated driver.
