news1@kilgorenewsherald. Bruce Crowe “The cost of freedom. In the United States America, in Texas, the words have history and they have meaning, but they’ve lost their power, Bruce Crowe says. In the Ukraine, they’re the harsh, hopeful, powerful reality people are facing every day. It’s been almost six years since Crowe, founder of Kilgore’s Cypress Interactive, relocated his family to Eastern Europe as missionaries. Based in Rzhyshchiv, they’re witnessing a nation’s rising firsthand and sharing their neighbors’ anxiety as Russia’s shadow falls ever darker on the country. Crowe was in Maidan, Kiev’s Independence Square, “where it all went down” at Christmas as protesters gathered in the heart of the city. “What we witnessed, with basically the revolution in the center, was the closest I’ve ever seen to the cost of freedom,” Crowe said Wednesday, Skyping from the pizza cafe he and his wife, Deborah, are establishing in Rzhyshchiv, an hour’s journey from Kiev. “These people have shown they’re ready to lay down their lives for their kids, their grandkids, their future generations. They’ve had enough of the tyranny. The Ukrainian people had their fill of tyranny, missionary Bruce Crowe says, protesters of all ages gathering in opposition to corrupt government officials. After the ousting of their failed administration, with the specter of invasion looming from Russia, the people are working to pick up the pieces of their country, filling the political void. It sounds cliche, but it’s powerful to be a part of it, to see a nation rise up and be born. They have an identity they didn’t have before, and they’re ready to die to keep it. Working with officials in his Ukrainian home and City of Kilgore leaders, Crowe established a sister-city link between the two municipal governments. The relationship has waned in recent years, but with the political and social upheaval in Ukraine and its Crimean Peninsula, Crowe is eager to reconnect the cities, a world apart. “We actually had a team come over and visit,” he said, recalling the private group Kilgore Economic Development Corporation’s Lisa Denton joined. “We did some business-development type meetings with the city, answered some questions pertaining to developing a budget. It went well, but the inroads were quashed soon after when recently ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych took control. “When he came into power the political landscape changed. It was not U.S.-friendly. People were a lot more conscious about the relationships they formed,” Crowe explained. Rzhyshchiv’s mayor and other local politicians were forced to change parties or face the consequences. “When there were any political campaigns here in Ukraine locally, if you put up a flag or poster of someone else you were marked. “That’s the kind of control that the president had. Now that he’s gone, there’s a lot more political neutrality toward the (European Union) and America. Definitely. The majority are leaning toward escaping Russia’s grasp. Tens of thousands of soldiers remain poised to invade Ukraine at Russian President Vladimir Putin’s command, extending the former Soviet Union’s footing in its Western smaller neighbor to the west. The military might looming along Ukraine’s eastern border is half the problem, Crowe says. “You’ve got a void. A political void. Basically, the previous administration is gone,” he explained. “Yes, it was extremely corrupt. Yanukovych, the former president, he had people in charge of the police, people in charge of the utilities, oil and gas … all of those guys have fled too because they’re all part of the corruption. Fortunately, the void is steadily being filled by good, honest people, Crowe added, not political professionals. Out in the country it’s business as usual, many Ukrainians living as Americans did 150 years ago. “People are very self-sustaining. Everyone’s got a garden. They’re good – it’s not like there’s any dependency on the government. It’s so corrupt, people have just learned how to go on with their lives. That’s a good thing. At the same time, people are waiting ... There’s just no middle class in the Ukraine. The poor, they’re not really as affected (by the political turmoil). It’s the rich oligarchs and those that are in charge that have been finally booted out. Now there’s a hope and an excitement that maybe there would be that middle class, that ability to democratically operate and create jobs and people make a life for themselves. The Crowes’ relationships with local government officials remain. – the couple bought property in the center of Rzhyshchiv for their cafe, next to the bus station, aiming to create a safe hangout for the 2,000-plus students of the town. “They’ve got nothing to do but drink. There’s no night-life, nothing is family-friendly. The cafe is finished but not officially open – the Crowes (seven family members and one on the way) have been waiting for gas for about eight months. “It’s taken two, almost three years, to start a private business. And that’s me, an American. I can’t imagine a Ukrainian trying to do it. It’s not Texas … We try to just be a light for God. We’re here primarily for him, the Gospel, to try and bring hope to people. That’s our mission. With all eyes on Ukraine and Russia, with the political void it would be advantageous to resurrect the sister-city link between Kilgore and Rzhyshchiv, Crowe says, to give residents in East Texas a chance to build relationships, give them a chance to see the people of a country in the midst of revolution. “Negatively it’s not affecting us at the moment, but we do have friends being called up on reserves: some tears shed, wives knowing that at any moment their husbands could be called up to fight. That’s what really hits on a local level. With the change of government there are more opportunities that will open up. It will eventually become more business-friendly, but up to this point the benefits have been cultural, just relationships. Accepting the threat Putin represents, Crowe insists he’s not anti-Russian. The facts are what they are, and he continues to pursue positive in-roads to the east as he continues his work in Ukraine. In the meantime, he’s watching his neighbors with ever-growing respect, their fervor as they pick up the pieces of their government, their country, and build it anew. “It really is the voices of the people. Everything that’s happening is just the regular voices. It’s not the fascists. It’s grandmas and fathers and teenagers and students. It’s just regular people out, standing up.
